Ralph Bailey BVetMed MRCVS Practice Owner
Ralph qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1990. After working in small animal and mixed practices in Oxford, Barnet and Somerset, he started working at East Barnet in June 1994. He became a partner in the practice in 2000 and later sole owner in 2009. Ralph grew up in Barnet, attending East Barnet School, and cares deeply about the community. He now lives in Colney Heath with his wife, Sarah, cats and reptiles. Ralph enjoys soft tissue surgery and emergency medicine. Outside of work he is an avid gardener and enjoys spending time with his son, Ed.
Murry Welsh BVetMed BPharm MRCVS
Murry qualified with Ralph in 1990, from the Royal Veterinary College. He owned a practice in Enniskillen which he sold in 1999, so that he could move to North London to raise his family. After spending 7 months travelling around the world with his wife, Perdi, he joined the East Barnet Vets in 2000. His interests are in all aspects of surgery and he is a keen ultrasonographer. He has been an external examiner for the Royal Veterinary College since 2004 and is the clinical coach for the junior veterinary team at the practice. He and Perdi have two children and two rescue cats.
Rachel Barnes VetMed BSc MRCVS Advanced Practitioner (Zoological Medicine) GPCert(ExP) PgC
Rachel qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2008 & worked in small animal & exotic practice for 5 years before joining the team at East Barnet. Rachel then went on to complete two exotic animal certificates prior to applying to the RCVS to be an Advance Practitioner in Zoological Medicine. She enjoys treating all manner of pets including dogs, cats, small mammals, reptiles, birds & even the occasional fish. She is an enthusiastic surgeon and loves the variety of cases she sees. She lives at home with husband Tim, their three children, dog, two cats and four tortoises.
Emete Ismail BVSc MRCVS
Emete qualified from The University of Liverpool in 2020 and initially worked in small animal practice, before moving closer to home in 2021, to join the team at East Barnet Vets. She loves all aspects of veterinary and is currently studying towards a certificate in Small Animal Surgery. At home, Em has five cats, three of which were rescued through the practice. In her spare time you can find Em travelling, pursuing her love of outdoor activities, and spending time with friends, family and cats.
Maureen Reiser BVetMed MRCVS BSc BSc
Maureen is originally from Illinois, USA, where she grew up surrounded by many pets. She achieved two BSc degrees in Animal Science and Biology from the University of Findlay in Ohio, prior to moving to the UK in 2019, to pursue her career in veterinary medicine. Maureen qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2023 and joined the East Barnet team in January 2024. She enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine but her special interests are dermatology, senior medicine and diagnostic imaging. Maureen has rescued a bearded dragon named Slug and she also co-parents a sassy dachshund named Lottie. Outside of work, Maureen enjoys going to concerts, spending time with friends, and film photography.
Ollie Morris BVMedSci BVM BVS MRCVS
Ollie qualified from the University of Nottingham in December 2024, and joined the practice 4 days after graduating. Ollie was born and raised in Barnet and also attended East Barnet School, like Ralph. Ollie attended the practice on work experience and then enjoyed many placement here, throughout his veterinary degree. Ollie has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery and diagnostic imaging. Ollie loves all animals but has a special spot in his heart for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Labrador Retrievers. Ollies’ hobbies include meeting up with friends, supporting Tottenham Hotspur, playing for a local football team and watching movies!
Doina Caraus DVM MRCVS
Doina is from the Republic of Moldova, but studied veterinary medicine in Romania. Upon graduating, Doina moved to the UK— a decision that she feels profoundly shaped both her professional path and personal values. For Doina, being a veterinary surgeon is “not just a career, but a way of contributing meaningfully to the lives of animals and the people who care for them.” She is motivated by a genuine desire to help people and their pets and always aims to create trust, comfort, and the best possible outcomes for those in her care. She joined East Barnet in 2021 and puts into practice her wonderful caring approach to medicine and surgery. She lives with her fiancée and rescued senior cat, Maffy.
Veterinary Nurses
Julia Mason RVN Head Nurse, Clinical coach
Julia qualified in 1989 and has a Certificate in Small Animal Nutrition. She is joint Head Nurse and a Clinical Coach, managing the nursing team and training veterinary nurse students. Julia enjoys dentistry and running Slimming Clinics, alongside caring for the pets involved in everyday veterinary procedures. Julia is married with 4 now adult children, and kept busy with her first grandchild, Holly, 3 dogs, 6 cats and 6 tortoises!
Charlie Storer RVN Head Nurse, Clinical coach
Charlie joined us as a trainee in 1991 and qualified as a VN in 1994 and has progressed through the ranks and is now our joint Head Nurse with Julia. She has also qualified as an assessor to enable her to train student nurses. She says that the most rewarding part of the job is the chance to provide comfort and ease the suffering of pets. She says the sheer variety of cases makes each day interesting and different from the last. Charlie lives in Kings Langley with her teenage daughter, 2 cats, 2 tortoises and their dog.
Kerry Tucker RVN ISFM Feline Friendly
I joined the practice as a young student over 30 years ago. After many years working with a variety of species l still love cats the most. I have three adorable rescue cats at home. Two of which are disabled, but live a happy, comfortable life!
Laura McAlister RVN Cert VNES
Laura graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2013, having spent 2 years of her training at East Barnet Vets. After graduating, Laura completed a qualification in nursing exotic species, which she enjoys putting to use here at the surgery with the varied species of patients we see! She likes to combine her love of nursing with her love of travelling and has volunteered with sloths in Costa Rica, lions & elephants in Malawi, and various wildlife in Laos. She lives in Enfield with her husband, Simon, and 2 cats, Evie and Eric (who were both strays brought into the practice!)
She enjoys many aspects of nursing, but her favourite part of the job is spending time with hospitalised patients and giving them lots of TLC to make them more comfortable. Outside of work, she loves baking and is often using the rest of the team at EBVS as guinea pigs for her latest bake!
Katrina Mortimer RVN
Katrina graduated from Middlesex University in 2016 with a BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Nursing. She has a deep love for animals of all kinds—from furry to scaly—but holds a particular soft spot for elderly cats. While she enjoys all aspects of veterinary nursing, she has a special interest in diagnostic imaging and laboratory sciences.
Katrina currently shares her home with one very spoiled cat and hopes that, in the future, she will be able to care for and provide a loving home to as many elderly cats as possible.
Amy Van Der Wens RVN
Amy graduated from Middlesex University in 2015 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Veterinary Nursing. She completed her 4 years of training at East Barnet Veterinary Surgery and after working locally, returned to join our team. Amy has an interest in medical nursing and enjoys spending time in wards having one to one care with the patients. She’s also fond of assisting with diagnostic imaging, including X-rays and ultrasounds.
Claire Corrie RVN
After completing a BSc (Hons) degree in Zoology and Animal Management, Claire qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2024, having spent four years working and training at a busy PDSA hospital, where she gained extensive practical experience across a wide range of cases. Claire joined East Barnet Veterinary Surgery in December 2025 and has a particular interest in cats and exotic animals. She lives at home with her husband Charlie, their son Tate, daughter Skylar, cats Max and Rosie, and their Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec, Pippin.
Receptionists
Di Brown
Di joined us in May 1994 after taking early retirement from the London Ambulance Service. She says that the transition from dealing with people to dealing with pets and their owners was a perfect move for her as she has always had pets of her own, together with an interest in nature and wildlife in general. She meets many of our clients in the park when walking her three dogs. She has been a volunteer worker for the National Animal Welfare Trust for years and is now a Trustee! Here, she co-ordinates the gifts of food that many of our clients bring in to the surgery for the NAWT.
Kirsty Pond-Smith
Kirsty joined us in 2009. She previously worked as an Administrator. Kirsty has grown up with dogs and still helps out at the family home with two retrievers and a cat. She presently lives in Enfield with her Husband, David & son, Max..
Maxine Finn
Maxine has been with us since 1995 – her previous career was in banking. Apart from reception duties Maxine also deals with administration, insurance and general queries. She is married with a son and has four rescued dogs & three horses, one she bred herself.Maxine also provides a service, where she cares for Client’s dogs whilst they are on holiday. She enjoys dining out & meeting up with friends.
Sue Wain
Sue the team joined us in March 2010. Previous jobs have included dog walking and co-ordinating the care of pets in carer’s homes. Sue has always had pets herself and at the moment has a nine month old English Bull Terrier, a pony called Chance and some tropical fish. Sue is married with two children and in her spare time enjoys walking her dog & riding her pony.
Sam Yeats
Sam lives in Enfield with her boyfriend Andrew. She has previously worked in a vets and loves working with animals. Her greatest experience was swimming with dolphins in the wild in New Zealand whilst travelling for 3 months. She doesn’t currently have any pets but did have a Syrian hamster called Gwen.
